County Championship Results - Congratulations to Martin Geear
Thursday 20 January 2011
This week the Leicestershire senior county closed squash
competition was held at the Leicester squash club. The O45
competition was won by Martin Geear. He comfortably defeated Dave
Wood in the final. Wood had unexpectedly beaten the number 2
seed Dave Shaw in the semifinal.
The ladies final was contested by Rachael Calvert and Jo Burnett.
The first game two games went comfortably to Calvert.
However, she made a string of unforced errors early in the
third and despite recovering to 10 all eventually lost the game
11-13. Calvert was back to full concentration in the fourth
and won it comfortably 11-5 and the match by three games to
one.
In the men's competition Harborough's Martin Geear had a good run
making it to the semifinal with 3-1 wins over both Kev Simpson and
another Harborough player, Steve Ward. Geear then faced the former
world ranked player and top seed Darren Lewis in the semifinal.
In the first game Lewis generously conceded half a dozen
points whilst letting his opponent practice a few of his shots.
No mercy was shown in the second game as Lewis turned on the
power & dominated winning it 11-1. Wondering if his
opponent was still alive, Lewis eased off in the third and Geear
was once again able to bring his shots into play and managed to
snatch the game 11-5. Lewis stepped up a gear once more &
completely dominated the fourth and final game winning it without
dropping a point.
In the final the hotly favoured Lewis met the number two seed
James Wright who had beaten James Hodson 3-1 in the other semi.
From start to finish the match was of the highest quality.
Surprisingly Wright raced into a strong lead with outstanding
shot play winning the first game and holding game ball in the
second before Lewis sneaked it 13-11. Wright once again
dominated the early stages of the third game by mercilessly moving
Lewis from corner to corner. Lewis worked hard making some
unbelievable pickups and testing Wright's fitness. Wright
hung on & won the third. However, when a few points down in the
fourth did not contest it any further - saving his energy
for the final game. The fifth was fiercely fought over:
Wright repeatedly played shots that would have been outright
winners in normal circumstances; Lewis retrieved the impossible
time after time. Wright held match balls at 10-9 and again at
11-10 before finally winning the game 13-11.
It was a spectacular match and a treat for all who came to
watch.
