Leicester Firsts win again!

It was bound to happen eventually. You can't run as far or as long as Jack Turney without eventually winning a game of squash in Leicester division 1. The moment came on Tuesday 8th at 20:48 and 31 seconds as his opponent, from Hermitage Squash Club near Coalville, put the last shot into the tin to a roar of delight from the crowd. It was a tough 5 set game in which Turney had to display more patience than his opponent, a considerable achievement considering he was playing King Patient of the Patient people from the Planet Patience, otherwise known as Ian Duffy. Ian's fellow team mates complained Ian screwed up but the home crowd knew it was the quality a Jack's determination that pulled him through.

Before Turney minor's heroics, Martin Geear was first on court playing county player John Freeman. Giving away almost 20 years for the umpteenth time Geear found the pace of his opponent quite annoying. Geear was always chasing the game (invariably in the back corners of the court) but his opponent, who clearly had no respect for age, kept smashing away mercilessly and bludgeoned Martin into submission.

Christison played infamous Bagley brother number three (Graham). Not wishing to destroy his reputation of taking every game to five, Christison took the game to five. Infamous Bagley number three, not known for his fitness, failed to understand how his shot playing ability failed to get the ball past his elasto arm man opponent and Christison ground him into a standstill by the end of the fifth.

Late replacement Martin Thompson probably did well to get a game off his opponent. On the other hand Ed has no idea as he failed to see anything of his game. A valuable point won nevertherless and, who knows, it could be the vital point come the end of the season.

That made it 2-2 in rubbers and it was all down the Steve Ward, who very kindly has been turning up this half of the season. Steve got off to a storming start against young Dane going two love up in a matter of mintues. His opponent was not to be outdone and produced some daring cross court nick shots to draw the game level. Worryingly for the home crowd Ward, playing an opponent 20 years his junior ( a common theme in the Harborough first team) started to look tired in the fourth. But cometh the hour cometh the man. His resolve was stiff and fully displayed on court as he moved ahead early in the fifth and applied the pressure to his opponent, eventually taking the game 11-5 and, with it, the match.

The win gave Leicester One 15 much needed points in their struggle for survival in the top flight. Strange things will have to happen for survival to become a reality.
